This was my entry for the Warhammer 40,000 squad category at Golden Demon U.K 2005,
an accumulation of approximately 120 hours work, between the concept of the marines, the converting, the painting, and making the display base.
I had seen the honour guard released by Games workshop, and loved the idea behind them; the ornate designs and insignia and the general feel of them. The sculpts were great, but i always felt that they could have been much more dynamic rather than the standing poses, so after looking at artwork and racking my brains i came up with the 4 poses i wanted for the honour guard, much of the look of them is influenced by the cover art of "Codex : Space Marines" particularly the standard bearer.
Marneus Calgar was originally painted for my own collection, but after he was finished i was very pleased with him, so decided to make a squad for him and enter him into the up-coming Golden Demon (since he probably wouldn't stand a chance on his own in the warhammer 40,000 single minaiture category.)
After a mad rush to get the squad done in time for Golden Demon, to the extent of finishing the display base the night before Golden Demon (that's correct, i did not sleep that night) i managed to enter it into the competition, It made First cut, but unfortunately didn't place.
You can see Marneus Calgar and his honour guard on display at Games Workshop Leicester at the moment.
