A very simple tutorial demonstrating one way to paint dark blue armour.
This Tutorial demonstrates one (of many) ways to paint dark blue armour,
This armour is an alternate scheme for an ultramarine, (since i am bored of the standard ultramarine blue) however it could be used for a number of different armies or materials.
The actuall paint-job had around 10 different layers of paint, rather than 5, however for the steps the colour change was very gradual, and hardly recognisable in photos, for this reason i have cut it down to 5 steps.
Start by undercoating the miniature, or area you wish to paint, in black.
For the first coat to the armour, i mixed Chaos black and Regal blue together in equal parts, and thinly applied it to the desired areas (you do not have to worry about being too neat as mistakes can be painted over afterwards.)
The next step involves adding the first highlights to the armour, add a mix of 3 parts Enchanted blue to 1 part Chaos black to the base colour mix from the last step (Regal blue and Chaos black). Make sure the paint is watered down, to something similar to the consistency of milk, this will allow the paint to be applied much more smoothly. Start by adding highlights towards the edges of the armour, or the highest parts where light would hit. Follow this by highlights of 4 parts Enchanted blue to 1 part Chaos black mixed in, moving further towards the edge of the armour as you go. Continue to highlight in this fashion untill you are using almost pure Enchanted blue.
Now, using the edge of your brush, very thinly line the edges of the armour with pure enchanted blue, which has been watered down.
Add a small amount of bleached bone to the Enchanted blue and apply a small highlight to the corners of the armour, this will pick out the highest parts and add a little more contrast. You can now paint a thin black line between all of the armour plates to spearate them, and correct and mistakes you may have made.
